Hi all, May I please ask a question, I was speaking to a lady friend who was given an Indian name to use on site this name was given without ceremony and the name is Winyan Wakan . Can I please ask is this name in the Lakota language and if anybody knows the answer to my question, could you please translate into english . Many thanks for any answers given . Robert .

To give a name without ceremony deprives the wear of the name much of its signicance.  To use a name without ceremony and without understanding it denies that names, themselves, have power.  That name is one that should not be used without a deeper understanding.

Today's society is one that forgets that names are given for reasons.  My mind is of a primitive mindset.  I do not like to give my name except to those I trust; I do not like for others to use it without my consent.  Names conduct character and touches the spirit.
